Designing an App to Help Farmers go Green

By Amanda Mathieson | 06/07/2022

As a branch out exercise from Farm Zero C, some members of the research team are working on an app that would help farmers identify the environmental impacts of their farm, as well as come up with a tailored plan of mitigation strategies to implement. Farmers would simply upload data relating to their farm into the app, map their boundaries and would be presented with the results, highlighting the biggest areas for concern, as well as recommended practices to implement. It is hoped this resource would make it easy for any farmer to take positive action in a way that’s tailored to their specific context.

While the app is still in early stages of development, the team, including Alejandro Vergara, Cian White and Gavin Hunt, have invited farmers and farmer advisors to the new Farm Zero C visitors centre to feed their expertise into the app design. At a workshop on Monday, they discussed features of the app, such as what mitigation strategies and tools farmers would most like to see included, what data they can easily input and how results should be presented. This will help guide the app’s design ensuring it is more effective and user-friendly. Future workshops will be planned as the app develops.
