Scoil Mhuire Crowned National “Environmental Innovators” Champions!

By Amanda Mathieson | 13/02/2023

Congratulations to Scoil Mhuire, Trim for being the National Champions of the pilot programme Environmental Innovators!

31st January 2023. Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine Pippa Hackett presents the Environmental Innovators National Champions award to Social Mhuire Trim Co.Meath classmates from L-r Rachel Whyte, Grace Reilly and Niamh Collins pictured along with Alan Jagoe (Chairman Agri Aware) and Amanda Mathieson (BiOrbic)

Environmental Innovators is a programme for Transition Year students to investigate innovative solutions to food system challenges our world faces today. Run by Agri Aware, and supported by BiOrbic, this was the first year of the programme. Despite it being a pilot year, over 7,500 students participated from 169 schools across Ireland! Five top group finalists were shortlisted for the final which was hosted by BiOrbic in the O’Brien Centre for Science, UCD.

The final was opened with messages from Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine with responsibility for Research and Development, Martin Heydon, and BiOrbic Director Kevin O Connor. The students were then given a tour of the BiOrbic labs at UCD and an opportunity to look at the other finalists projects and finally, Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine for Land Use and Biodiversity, Pippa Hackett crowned the winners of the programme.

BiOrbic were delighted to be able to support Agri Aware in the Environmental Innovator’s pilot year, and we look forward to helping out in the future years of this great programme!
